HISTORY OF WRIGHT’S CHAPEL
UNITED METHODIST CHURCH
Ms. Mamie Pipkins
Church Historian
Wright’s Chapel United Methodist Church began as a brush arbor in the 1870’s. We consider October, 1873 as our birthday, and have Homecoming in October each year in celebration of that. Soon after its beginning, the church experienced such growth that they built the first wood structure…two more, larger improved wooden buildings followed. The present block sanctuary was built in 1950 and mostly funded with the sale of timber from the church property. The rafters, the altar rail, and the wonderful pine paneling behind the pulpit were salvaged from the old church.
The church was built on land donated to it in 1880 by Lewis J. Kinsey…it included enough for the church, a cemetery established in the 1970’s, a playground for children, and plenty of parking space. Through the years, church programs have evolved from a one-Sunday-a-month worship service to worship every Sunday and no Sunday School at all to several Sunday School classes. Current programs are listed and discussed elsewhere on this website.
Originally, Wright’s Chapel was literally “The Church In The Wildwood”. Now it is a beautiful white country church with nicely landscaped surroundings and a paved road leading up to it! We welcome you to worship and visit with us…you might LIKE us!
